"Dumpster Diving" Digging

The author Lars Eighner may have a been a bum, but he definitely was not an uneducated bum. When he wrote Dumpster Diving he knew how to affect an audience via Logos, Pathos, and Ethos. And by doing so, he put his essay in a college English book as an example of how to properly use these methods.

He has many examples of Logos in the essay; He references two poisons, Botulism and Pathogens, both common food poisons. He explains that "botulism is a possibility" when dealing with canned foods, and that pathogens are rarely found in candy. So be sure to remember that when you're a starved college student and have to dumpster dive for food.

He also effectively uses the method of Ethos. First of all, he claims he dumpster dived for years. Which means he is very credible and has learned the tricks of the trade. He can also write fairly well, which is accredited to being educated.

Lars, I have to hand it to you. You brought even the last and sometimes most respected part of the method of argumentation. You used Pathos brilliantly with a correct, humorous and pleasing tone. Using terminology such as Scavenging, and looking deeper into something that really is not that important.

Ian, I throughly enjoyed reading your journal entry. I liked your examples because they demonstrated your thinking process while reading this essay.

That made me giggle.

I enjoyed this entry, too. I like how at the end you mentioned that this dumpster diving is not something that is considered important, but he looked deeper into it anyway and wrote a kickass essay about it. gr8!
